Development of a Composite of Bio-Carbon in the Form of Granules With a Bio-Based Binder Compatible With the Metallurgical Sector

The metallurgical industry uses large quantites of mineral coal of fossil origin as a reducing agent in several processes. Plant-based biochar is an effective substitute for some of these transformation processes while significantly reducing environmental impacts.

The production and agglomeration of a high-carbon biochar product that meets the specifications of the metallurgical industry represents several technological challenges. Xylo-Carbone Inc. has a state-of-the-art biochar production plant (annual capacity: 3 million kg).

This project consists of developing industrial-scale biochar agglomeration processes to develop a proportion of this production and prepare for expansion projects. The supply of wood material is secured with a supply guarantee from the Ministry of Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks (MELCFFP) and regional partners.
