Montreal, November 6, 2024 – Collaborative research is a powerful lever for economic development in Quebec, according to the findings of the five-year report from Quebec’s nine Industrial Research Sectoral Groups (RSRI), conducted by the Quebec Ministry of Economy, Innovation, and Energy (MEIE).
Significant Impact on Business and Societal Transformation
Through their support, the RSRIs report that nearly 770 businesses, on average, conduct R&D activities each year with the expertise of research organizations and institutions within their network. This represents a total investment of $929 million over five years in industry-institution collaborative research, generating estimated economic benefits for Quebec of $1 billion. Ultimately, the RSRIs positively impact the competitiveness of businesses in the market—companies achieve additional sales thanks to their R&D—and for Quebec society, which benefits from higher-quality or more sustainable products and services.
By stimulating business innovation, these organizations also contribute to talent development, as well as job creation and retention: from 2018 to 2023, nearly 7,700 students were trained, and close to 4,700 jobs were created within RSRI-led research projects.
Quebec's knowledge base is equally strengthened, with nearly 1,500 patents, licenses, and other forms of protection, as well as numerous research publications resulting from these R&D projects.
An Effective Network of Complementary Actors in the Innovation Ecosystem
The nine RSRIs are mandated to facilitate and fund collaborative research and development (R&D) projects between industry and research actors, promoting and accelerating the development of new solutions, knowledge transfer, talent training, and technological adoption by companies in nine different strategic economic sectors: aluminum, aerospace, bioeconomy, biopharmaceuticals, electric energy, advanced materials, digital technologies, health technologies, and metal processing.
These nonprofit organizations were established in the 2000s to accelerate R&D in sectors prioritized for Quebec and are financially supported by the Ministry of Economy, Innovation, and Energy. They work in complement with other organizations within the research and innovation ecosystem.
Not only do the RSRIs bridge the contributions of the research community and business needs, but they also stimulate business investment in R&D, which has been steadily declining from private sources. Based on their results, the RSRIs represent a proven, effective tool for contributing to the achievement of the goals of the government’s Quebec Research and Innovation Investment Strategy (SQRI2).
About the RSRIs
Quebec’s Industrial Research Sectoral Groups (RSRI) have been entrusted by the Quebec government with the mandate to support collaborative research. There are nine RSRIs: CQDM, CQRDA, CRIAQ, CRIBIQ, CRITM, INNOVÉÉ, MEDTEQ+, PRIMA and PROMPT, pushing the frontiers of innovation by fostering strategic partnerships between the industrial sector and academic research in high-knowledge sectors.
