Kruger Énergie and the Régie intermunicipale du centre de valorisation des matières résiduelles du Haut-Saint-François et Sherbrooke (Valoris) are joining forces to reduce the landfilling of organic matter and avoid the production of greenhouse gases.
Despite the efforts made by citizens to meet the government's landfill reduction objectives through the use of the brown bin, a lot of organic matter ends up in landfills. In fact, Valoris notes in its daily operations that approximately 50% of household waste is still composed of organic matter.
To combat this environmental scourge, Valoris and Kruger are combining their expertise and innovative technologies to recover the organic matter still present in residential garbage. Valoris will remove the organic matter from the waste through its specialized sorting line while Kruger will direct it to its cogeneration plant to recover it in the form of electricity.
These operations will make it possible to divert close to 20,000 tons of organic matter from landfill while perpetuating the life of the Valoris technical landfill site (Bury Estrie), providing a renewable material for the generation of electricity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
