Optimizing Combinations of Marine Biostimulants and New Agronomic Synergies in Canola Production

The project involves developing an innovative strategy for marine biostimulants to boost productivity and stress resistance in the cultivation of canola, Canada's second most important crop.

The global biostimulants market is still booming, with an anticipated annual growth rate of 11.8% between now and 2027, reaching an estimated value of US$6.2 billion in 2027. The market is mainly driven by the strong demand for high value crops worldwide and the increasing need to sustain crop growth due to abiotic stress resulting from changing climatic conditions. The organic food industry, which is developing at a rapid pace, is also a strong driver of growth for the biostimulants industry. Growing awareness among farmers of the benefits of biostimulants and the increasing adoption of sustainable production methods are other factors driving growth in this market.

The valorization of marine biomass is one of the main areas of economic development for Eastern Quebec. This project will help structure Quebec's marine biotechnology industry by integrating the exploitation of local aquatic resources into the development of innovative products with strong commercial potential. This project is in line with the Quebec government's Avantage Saint-Laurent strategy and the development of the blue economy.
