Recovering Phosphates to Improve Fish Farming and Food Autonomy in Quebec

The pandemic has demonstrated the importance of food autonomy. Fish farming is an important avenue to meet this collective need. The production capacity of fish farming operations is often limited by the amount of phosphorus in the effluent. A way to remove and recycle this phosphorus from the effluent is desired by the industry for existing sites and new facilities. ECOTHOR®-EC, a patented electro-technological process from Sherbrooke-based company E2metrix Inc. will allow for the removal of phosphorus, including its recovery for reuse as fertilizer. The project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of phosphorus removal at Pisciculture Magnétique Inc. in Chartierville, QC, as well as the recovery of phosphorus by a ceramic membrane for reuse as fertilizer.
