The bioeconomy is based on the production and valorization of different bioresources: agricultural, forest-related, residual and aquatic, including marine bioresources. The production and valorization of bioresources are intended to meet alimentary and industrial needs, in the context of a sustainable circular economy.
The potential of Quebec's fisheries sector – which refers to the exploitation of living aquatic resources – represents a promising avenue for Quebec's bioeconomy. Marine biotechnologies offer avenues for the valorization of marine products and their co-products in a multitude of industrial applications, such as agrobiotechnology, aquaculture, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, animal and human health, biofuels, and biomedicine, all of which are active industrial sectors in Quebec. The global marine biotechnology market reached a value of $5.4 billion (US) in 2022 and is estimated to reach $6.9 billion (US) in 2029.
In this context, marine biotechnology is a key avenue to modernize and ensure the sustainability of the fishing and aquaculture industry as well as to find alternative solutions to the burial of marine waste. The development of marine biotechnologies in Quebec is one of the objectives of the St. Lawrence Advantage vision, which aims to provide maritime communities with promising and sustainable development opportunities. The program provides financial assistance to projects for the development and commercialization of innovative products derived from the valorization of aquatic resources and marine co-products that result from the use of biotechnologies in order to create a perennial, inclusive, market-oriented sector that is globally recognized as a model for the valorization and sustainable commercialization of marine resources.
It is in this context that the CRIBIQ is launching, in collaboration with the direction of the maritime strategy's secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility of Quebec, a new call for project proposals within the framework of the BTM-Propulsion program, in order to pursue the initiative of financially supporting the companies who work in the field of marine biotechnologies in Quebec.
